Mumbai

Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is India’s largest city. Its population is around 15 million. The city is built on the island of Salsette. 25 million people live in the metropolitan area of the city, and this is the world’s most populous settlement. The city has a deep natural harbor.

The city is the commercial, financial and cultural capital of India. The Indian Cinema industry, known as Bollywood, is located here. For these reasons, the city receives massive immigration from other parts of India and contains many different languages and cultures.

The area covered by the city now used to be 7 islands. These islands have been inhabited since ancient times, but they were not important trade and population centers. In 1534, the Portuguese captured the region, and in 1661 the region passed to the British. In 1668, the British rented it to the British East India Company. The company found the natural harbor here and made it the first ports in India. The population of the region increased rapidly. The islands were combined with a large project in the region between 1817-1845. Later, the American Civil War and the opening of the Suez Canal boosted trade in the region and the city became one of India’s main centers. The population of the city exceeded 1 million in 1906. In the 1940s, the city became an important center of the Indian independence movement. In the 1970s, there was a heavy migration to the city and Bombay became the most populous city in India.
