The company found the natural harbor here and made it the first ports in India. The population of the region increased rapidly. The islands were combined with a large project in the region between 1817-1845. Later, the American Civil War and the opening of the Suez Canal boosted trade in the region and the city became one of India’s main centers. The population of the city exceeded 1 million in 1906. In the 1940s, the city became an important center of the Indian independence movement. In the 1970s, there was a heavy migration to the city and Bombay became the most populous city in India.
