New York is the largest city in the United States in terms of population. It is located in the state of New York with the same name. It has been one of the most important commercial and financial centers in the world for more than a century. The city is recognized as a world city due to its global influence in media, politics, education, entertainment and fashion. It is a very important center for foreign affairs as it hosts the United Nations General Council building. Many unemployed and homeless live in poor districts.

The city is divided into five sections: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. New York is an immigrant city. Approximately 170 languages ​​are spoken in the city, and one in three people was born in a country other than the USA. English is spoken with various accents. Spanish is spoken in addition to English, Italian in Little Italy, and Chinese in China Town (Chinatown).

New York is also the birthplace of many American cultural movements. Some of these movements are the Harlem Renaissance in literature and the visual arts, abstract expressionism in painting (New York School), hip hop, punk, salsa and Tin Pan Alley in music. It has been named the City that Never Sleeps, with its 24-hour metro and heavy traffic.

The statue of liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park and Times Square, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Modern History Museums are the city’s attractions. With its skyscrapers, streets, restaurants, shopping malls and people, New York attracts tourists.

The city of New York was founded by the Dutch in 1613 under the name New Amsterdam. The city passed to the United Kingdom in 1664 and took the name New York. In 1778, the city became the capital of the newly established United States of America for 2 years. The importance of the city continued to grow even after it moved to the capital city Washington.

On September 11, 2001, the city witnessed the worst terrorist incident in American history. During this event, known as the September 11, 2001 Attack, terrorists crashed into New York’s tallest skyscrapers, the World Trade Center buildings (Twin Towers), and killed nearly 3,000 people.

Wall Street Street, where the heart of the financial world beats, is located in the Manhattan part of New York. The New York stock exchange (New York Stock Exchange) is located here. The famous Statue of Liberty is on a small island in New York harbor. Theater and musicals are centered around Broadway street. John F. Kennedy International Airport is one of the airports with the highest passenger traffic in the world. Museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum have the most valuable art collections in the world. The city’s famous newspaper, New York Times, is one of the most respected newspapers in the world. The headquarters of ABC, CBS and NBC, America’s three largest television channels, are located in New York.

Approximately 40 million tourists visit the city annually. Commonly visited places are the shopping centers located in Empire State Building, Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, Broadway, Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMa, Bronx Zoo and Madison Avenue. Also, the Halloween Parade and Tribeca Film Festival are cultural events that attract tourists and Americans alike. Central Park is the most visited park in the USA. New York’s food culture is very wide. Especially bagel and New York style pizza are the most famous foods. Middle Eastern food is also fairly easy to find.
