One of the first things travelers to Bangkok need to decide is how to get from the airport to the city center. Especially for first-time arrivals, the distance between Bangkok airport and the city center can seem a little confusing due to traffic density and different transportation options. Moreover, there are both Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport in the city.
For this reason, first of all, knowing which airport interests you makes transportation planning much easier.
In this guide, you will find the general structure of the airports in Bangkok, which airport the flights from Turkey use, the terminal layout and the options that can be preferred for transportation to the city center. I will discuss all alternatives step by step, from Airport Rail Link trains to municipal buses, from applications such as Grab and Bolt to taxi and private transfers.
While creating your trip plan after reaching the city center, the regions I explained in my article titled Places to visit in Bangkok can make your job quite easy.

Transportation from Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) to the City Center
Bangkok has two major airports open to passenger traffic: Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK).
While Don Mueang is mostly used by low-cost airlines, Suvarnabhumi Airport is the focus of scheduled flights from Turkey to Bangkok. For this reason, I will discuss the transportation options to the city center through Suvarnabhumi throughout the content.
Suvarnabhumi Airport, located about 25 kilometers east of the city center, is one of the largest and busiest airports in Thailand. Most of the international and domestic flights take place here. Especially in peak seasons, passport control, baggage delivery and walking times in the terminal may take longer than you think. That’s why it’s useful to add some time above your landing time when planning transportation to the city center
Turkish Airlines’ Bangkok flights departing from Istanbul are operated to Suvarnabhumi Airport and the flights are met through the main passenger terminal, Suvarnabhumi Passenger Terminal. Pegasus, AJet and SunExpress do not have direct scheduled flights to Bangkok. Although there is a single main terminal structure at the airport, there are different concourse areas between A-G within the terminal.
In addition, the SAT-1 satellite terminal, which was opened in 2023, connects to the main terminal with the automatic train system and is used for some long-haul flights.
The main vehicles used for transportation to the city center are as follows:

Airport Rail Link (ARL)
Airport Rail Link is one of the most practical options for those who want to reach Bangkok city center from Suvarnabhumi Airport by rail. The line runs from the airport to Phaya Thai station. Transfer can be made to BTS Skytrain in Phaya Thai and MRT line in Makkasan. If you’re staying on the Siam, Sukhumvit, Silom, or Pratunam side, these connections work pretty well.
The journey on the Suvarnabhumi Airport – Phaya Thai line takes about 26-30 minutes. The fare varies between THB 15-45 depending ON the distance; the full line from the airport to Phaya Thai costs THB 45. Trains run from 05:30 to 24:00. The flight interval is about 10-11 minutes during peak hours and about 12-15 minutes during other hours.
Airport Rail Link station is located on the B1 floor of the main terminal building at the airport. After passport control and baggage delivery, you can go to the station by following the “Airport Rail Link” or “Train to City” signs. The main stops on the line include Makkasan, Ratchaprarop and Phaya Thai.
You can buy your ticket at ticket machines or toll booths at the station. The single-use ticket works with the token system used in the turnstile. If you are going to transfer to BTS or MRT, you need to buy a separate ticket for those lines; ARL ticket is not valid in these systems.
There is no common structure in Bangkok like in European cities, where a single city card passes smoothly on all rail systems. For this reason, it is necessary to consider Airport Rail Link, BTS and MRT tickets separately.
As I mentioned in my article, I stayed at the ibis Bangkok Siam (★★★) hotel in Siam Square, one of the most central points of the city, on my last trip to Bangkok. When I landed at the airport, I came to Phaya Thai by Airport Rail Link and reached the hotel comfortably with BTS transfer from here.
If your suitcase is not very large and you are landing before midnight, ARL is a very useful alternative to Bangkok airport transportation options.

Municipal Buses
In Bangkok, the public transport network is quite large and Suvarnabhumi Airport is one of the important connection points of this network. BMTA buses offer direct connections, especially for those who want to go to different regions such as Khao San Road, Victory Monument, On Nut or Don Mueang Airport. Although the transportation time to the city center is longer than the rail systems, it is still one of the preferred options due to the low fees.
One of the most used lines from the airport is the S1 bus. This line runs between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Khao San Road and takes about 60-90 minutes to reach its destination. The fee is approximately 60 THB. The S4 line serves the direction of Sanam Luang and the journey time usually varies between 70-90 minutes.
There are also BMTA lines running through the Transportation Center at the airport, with line 549 reaching Minburi, 550 Happy Land, 551 Victory Monument, 552 On Nut BTS station, 553 Samut Prakan, 554 Don Mueang Airport, 555 Rangsit and 558 Central Rama II area. While the journey time on these lines varies between about 60-120 minutes depending on the route, the fees are USUALLY 35-50 THB.
BMTA buses do not depart directly from the main terminal. First of all, you need to reach the Transportation Center within the airport. After leaving the terminal, you can move to this area in a few minutes using free shuttle services. Just follow the “Public Bus” or “Transportation Center” statements on the direction signs at the airport.
The ticket system is quite simple. Fees are usually paid in the bus and no advance reservation is required. Although cash is the most common method, there are different payment options available on some lines. Before a trip, it’s helpful to check the stop boards to make sure you have the right line.
These buses offer a wide access network to areas outside Bangkok’s tourist centers. Especially those staying around Khao San Road, Victory Monument or On Nut can easily benefit from these lines as they can travel without transfer.
Grab / Bolt / inDrive
One of the most used methods to call a taxi in Bangkok is mobile transportation applications. Grab, in particular, is the most widely used platform throughout the city. In addition, Bolt and inDrive are also actively serving. It is preferred by many travelers because you can see your destination in advance through the app and find out the estimated price before the trip starts.
Getting from Suvarnabhumi Airport to central areas like Siam Square, Sukhumvit, Silom, or Khao San Road usually takes about 30-50 minutes. Travel time can vary depending on Bangkok traffic. Fees vary between 350-600 THB depending on the destination and demand density. In particular, the Grab app is often the option with the largest network of drivers when it comes to finding a ride at the airport.
To request a ride through the app, simply follow the directions on the arrivals level after passport control and baggage dropoff. There are designated meeting points for ride-hailing vehicles at the airport. Checking the door number and meeting point shown by the app during the reservation makes your job easier.
Credit card, debit card and cash options can be used on the payment side. It is also possible to complete the payment process completely digitally by entering a card into the application. You don’t need to negotiate because the fare appears before the trip.

Taxi
No matter what time of day you get off at Suvarnabhumi Airport, it’s easy to find a taxi. Taxi is still one of the most preferred options, especially for those who want door-to-door transportation, have a lot of luggage or do not want to deal with public transportation transfers. Due to the wide spread of Bangkok, taxis provide direct access to almost every district in the city center.
The journey from Suvarnabhumi Airport to central destinations like Siam Square, Silom, Sukhumvit, or Khao San Road usually takes about 30-45 minutes. Taximeter rides often cost between 350-500 THB. In addition, there is an airport surcharge of APPROXIMATELY 50 THB applied at the airport exits. Tolls are also paid by the passenger if the motorway is used.
Official taxis can be taken from the taxi area located at Level 1 on the arrival floor of the airport. You can reach the taxi points operating with the Sira system by following the “Public Taxi” signs in the terminal. Since the vehicle is directed by the system in charge here, you do not need to search for a vehicle.
The payment is usually made to the driver at the end of the trip. Although the use of taximeters is common in Bangkok, it is useful to clarify the pricing details before the trip starts, especially at the airport exits. Confirming in advance whether the airport surcharge and possible highway crossings are included in the taxi fare prevents confusion later on.
On my last trip to Bangkok, we chose to use a taxi instead of Airport Rail Link because our suitcases increased considerably on the way back. Especially for those who travel as a family or travel with large luggage, it is a serious convenience to reach the airport directly from the hotel door. However, before starting the trip, it is useful to clarify whether to use a taximeter and how additional fees will be applied.
Private Transfer
Private transfer services are one of the most comfortable options for those who do not want to deal with processes such as public transportation, taxi queue or vehicle search through the application after getting off the plane. Since the reservation was booked in advance, the driver will meet you at the airport and drop you off directly at your hotel or at the address you specify. It is especially preferred by those who come to Bangkok for the first time, families with children or those who travel with a lot of luggage.
Private transfer journeys between Suvarnabhumi Airport and the city center usually take about 35-50 minutes. Fares often range from THB 900-1600, depending on vehicle type, number of passengers, and destination region.
Private transfers are usually booked online prior to travel. Since the flight information is entered into the system, possible delays are monitored and the driver plans accordingly. In most services, the pickup point and the driver’s contact information are sent to the rider after booking.
The main options you can use to book a private transfer:
“Airport Taxis” service on Booking.com
Airport transfers offered by the hotel
Welcome Pickups
Transfer services offered through GetYourGuide
It is worth asking in advance whether the hotel you will book through Booking.com is a transfer service. Especially high-end hotels can offer airport transfers with their own vehicles. While these services are usually slightly higher than standard taxi fares, they can provide a direct pickup and flat rate advantage.
Similarly, companies such as Welcome Pickups work with flight tracking, welcome service and a predetermined price system. For those who come to Bangkok for the first time, especially when landing at night, such services can provide extra comfort.
For those who want to book a private transfer in Bangkok, you can also check out the Private Transfer from Suvarnabhumi Airport to your Hotel option on GetYourGuide.
Car Rental
Since most of those planning to visit Bangkok city center can move comfortably with BTS, MRT, taxi and application-based vehicles, car rental is not the first option that comes to mind. On the other hand, if you are planning a wider route covering different parts of Pattaya, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin or Thailand, the rental car can provide serious freedom of movement.
Suvarnabhumi Airport has offices of international and local companies such as Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt and Thai Rent A Car. You can make your reservation online before the trip, or you can rent a car at the airport depending on availability.
Car rental counters are located in the Arrival Hall of the airport. After leaving the baggage claim area, you can reach the relevant offices by following the “Car Rental” signs. It can be advantageous to book in advance, as it can be difficult to find a car, especially during New Year’s Eve, Songkran and other busy holiday periods.
Passport, driver’s license and credit card are usually requested for vehicle delivery. One of the important points to be considered here is the issue of driver’s license. The most hassle-free method for foreign visitors to drive in Thailand is to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with a Turkish driver’s license. Many car rental companies and insurance companies can also request this document.
Traffic in Bangkok drives on the left, and heavy traffic in the city center can continue for most of the day. For this reason, it is possible to say that renting a car does not provide a great advantage if you will only spend time in central areas such as Siam, Sukhumvit or Silom. On the other hand, a rental car represents a very flexible transportation alternative for those planning a trip to Thailand that includes different cities after Bangkok.
Are public transport cards valid for airport transportation in Bangkok?
Bangkok does not have a widespread 24-hour, 48-hour or 72-hour tourist card system that includes airport transportation, as we see in European cities. BTS Skytrain and MRT metro systems used in the city have their own ticket and card structures, but the Airport Rail Link line running between Suvarnabhumi Airport and the city center has a separate pricing system.
For this reason, most of the visitors to Bangkok buy Airport Rail Link tickets for airport transportation and also use BTS or MRT tickets for urban transportation. Current information is available on the official websites of Airport Rail Link and city transportation companies.
Daily or multi-use BTS cards can be advantageous for those who use public transportation frequently in the city, but these cards are not valid on the Airport Rail Link line. For example, you need to buy an Airport Rail Link ticket to go from the airport to Phaya Thai station. Then, when you switch to the BTS network, you can continue your urban journeys with BTS tickets or cards.
Similarly, separate pricing is applied to BMTA public buses and the fee is usually paid in the vehicle. For this reason, it is not possible to use the entire transportation network in Bangkok with a single card. Current tariffs and card options can be followed through the official channels of BTS and MRT.
A little tip: The most common way to use it in Bangkok is to reach the center from the airport via Airport Rail Link and buy BTS or MRT tickets as needed in the city. This method is both simple and economical, especially for short-term visits. If you plan to stay in the city for a few days, you can consider public transport cards, but it is worth keeping in mind that you need to buy a separate ticket for the airport journey.
In summary, transportation from Bangkok Airport to the city center
There are two major airports for passengers arriving in Bangkok by plane: Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Suvarnabhumi Airport is the focus of scheduled flights from Turkey to Bangkok. Turkish Airlines’ flights from Istanbul also fly to this airport. For this reason, most of the Turkish travelers traveling to Bangkok plan to reach the city center via Suvarnabhumi.
On the transportation side, there are options that appeal to different budgets and expectations. Airport Rail Link is generally the first choice for those who want to reach the center without getting stuck in traffic. Rail system connections are very useful, especially for those who will stay on the Phaya Thai, Siam or Sukhumvit side.
While those traveling with a lower budget can consider public buses, Grab, Bolt, inDrive and taxi options stand out for those with excess luggage or those who want door-to-door transportation. Private transfer services can also be preferred for those who want to be greeted by the driver as soon as they get off the plane.
Although the public transportation system is developed in Bangkok, it should not be forgotten that the Airport Rail Link line used in airport transportation operates separately from BTS and MRT systems. For this reason, it is useful to keep in mind that city transportation cards and airport travel cannot always be evaluated within the same system.
