Of all Ayutthaya’s ruins, none is more famous than Wat Mahathat, where a serene stone Buddha head rests cradled in the roots of an ancient bodhi tree. This haunting image has become a symbol of the entire historical park and one of the most photographed sights in Thailand. Beyond that single icon, the temple is among the oldest and most significant in the former capital.

The Famous Buddha Head

The sandstone Buddha head, gently embraced by gnarled tree roots, is believed to have fallen during the temple’s destruction and gradually become entwined as the tree grew around it. It now sits at ground level, and visitors are asked to crouch so their heads are never higher than the Buddha’s, a sign of respect. The effect is quietly moving and unforgettable.

A Temple of Royal Importance

Founded in the 14th century, Wat Mahathat was one of Ayutthaya’s most important monasteries and a royal temple at the heart of the city. Its central prang once held sacred relics, and the surrounding grounds are studded with rows of headless Buddha statues and crumbling chedis that speak to the temple’s former grandeur.

Exploring the Grounds

Take your time wandering among the brick ruins, weathered stupas and lines of statues. Information boards explain the layout, and the relatively compact site is easy to combine with neighbouring temples. Early morning light is especially beautiful here and helps you beat both the heat and the larger tour groups.

Visitor Tips

A small entry fee applies, and modest dress is required as the site remains sacred. Remember the rule about not standing over the Buddha head when taking photos. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes, and consider hiring a bicycle to link Wat Mahathat with the rest of the park.
