Once one of the largest and most splendid cities in the world, Ayutthaya was the capital of the Siamese kingdom for over four centuries before its destruction in 1767. Today its evocative ruins, scattered across an island ringed by rivers, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Thailand’s most rewarding historical destinations. An easy day trip from Bangkok, it offers a powerful glimpse into the country’s royal past.

A Glimpse of a Lost Capital

At its height, Ayutthaya was a cosmopolitan trading hub home to hundreds of temples and grand palaces. The brick prangs, weathered chedis and rows of headless Buddha statues that remain hint at its former glory. Wandering the park, it is easy to imagine the scale of the city that once rivalled the great capitals of Europe and Asia.

Exploring the Ruins

The historical park is compact enough to explore in a day, with the main temple ruins clustered on the central island. Renting a bicycle is a popular and atmospheric way to move between sites, while tuk-tuks offer a quicker option in the heat. Early morning and late afternoon bring the softest light and the most comfortable temperatures.

Respecting a Sacred Place

Although in ruins, the temples remain sacred. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and behave respectfully, particularly near Buddha images, where climbing or posing disrespectfully is forbidden. Many sites charge a small entry fee, and a combined ticket can cover several of the main temples.

Getting There from Bangkok

Ayutthaya lies about 80 kilometres north of Bangkok and is easily reached by train, minivan or organised tour, with the journey taking around one and a half to two hours. River cruises also run between the two cities. It makes an excellent day trip, though an overnight stay lets you enjoy the ruins at their quietest.
