Takayama’s Sanmachi Suji is one of Japan’s best-preserved old merchant quarters, a grid of dark wooden townhouses, sake breweries and craft shops in the heart of the Hida mountains. Wandering its lanes feels like stepping back into the Edo period.
The Old Merchant Streets
The three main streets are lined with lattice-fronted houses that once belonged to wealthy merchants. Many now hold cafes, galleries and shops selling Hida woodwork and the local sarubobo charm. Sake breweries hang cedar balls over their doors to signal a fresh brew, and several offer tastings.

Local Flavours
This is the place to try Hida beef, often served as skewers, sushi or croquettes you can eat as you stroll. Mitarashi dango and other street snacks line the route, making a slow graze through the quarter half the pleasure of a visit.
Getting There
Sanmachi is a flat ten-minute walk from Takayama Station, just across the Miyagawa river. Early morning is the quietest and most atmospheric time, before the day-trip crowds arrive from Nagoya and Kanazawa.
The old town is the soul of Takayama. From here, the morning markets and the Takayama Jinya are only a short walk away.
