Takayama is a beautifully preserved castle town in the Hida mountains, famous for its Edo-era streets, morning markets and access to the Japanese Alps and Shirakawa-go. It makes a rewarding stop between Nagoya and Kanazawa. This guide brings together our individual Takayama travel guides to help you plan.
Our Takayama Travel Guides
- Takayama Old Town: Walking the Sanmachi Quarter — Edo-era merchant streets.
- Takayama Jinya and the Morning Markets — history and daily life.
- Shirakawa-go: A Day Trip from Takayama — UNESCO thatched village.
- Hida and the Japanese Alps: Mountains Around Takayama — Kamikochi and the peaks.
How Long to Stay
One full day covers the old town, the Jinya and the markets. Add a second day for Shirakawa-go, and a third if you want to reach Kamikochi or the Okuhida onsen. The town also works as an overnight stop on the scenic route across central Japan.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn bring the famous Takayama Festival and brilliant foliage, while winter blankets Shirakawa-go in snow. Summer is cool and green, ideal for the high mountains, which are closed in the deepest winter months.
