Bukhara’s old city is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Central Asia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where mosques, madrasas and trading domes crowd together along shady lanes. Unlike many ancient cities, much of Bukhara’s historic fabric survives intact, making a stroll through it feel like stepping back in time.
Madrasas and Trading Domes
The old town is dotted with grand madrasas, their portals decorated with intricate tilework, and with the covered bazaars known as taki, where merchants once sold hats, jewellery and money. Many of these domed markets still bustle with craftspeople and traders today, selling miniatures, ceramics and the fine textiles for which the region is famous.
Chor Minor and Hidden Corners
Tucked away in the back lanes is the charming Chor Minor, a small gatehouse with four slender blue-capped towers that has become one of Bukhara’s most photographed sights. Wandering away from the main squares rewards visitors with quiet courtyards, old caravanserais and glimpses of everyday life in a city that has welcomed travellers for millennia.
Lyab-i Hauz
At the social heart of the old town lies Lyab-i Hauz, a shaded pool surrounded by mulberry trees and historic buildings. In the evening, locals and visitors gather at its teahouses to relax over a pot of green tea. It is the perfect place to pause, watch the world go by, and appreciate the gentle rhythm of life in Bukhara.
