In the old city of Damascus stands one of the oldest and grandest mosques in the world. The Umayyad Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus, has been a place of worship for well over a thousand years, and its history reaches back even further, to a site that served sacred purposes long before Islam. For Muslims, it is among the most important early monuments of their faith.

A Site of Layered Faith

The ground on which the mosque stands has been holy for a very long time. In the Roman and Byzantine eras a great church dedicated to John the Baptist occupied the site, itself built over an earlier temple. After Damascus came under Muslim rule in the seventh century, the space was shared for a time, serving both Christian and Muslim worshippers, before being developed into the grand mosque that exists today. This long succession of sacred uses gives the building an unusually deep history.

Built in its present monumental form in the early eighth century under the Umayyad dynasty, the mosque set a template for Islamic architecture that influenced countless later buildings. Its vast courtyard, prayer hall, and minarets, together with its famous golden mosaics depicting gardens and palaces, made it one of the wonders of the medieval world. As one of the earliest surviving great mosques, it holds a special place in the architectural history of Islam.

Relics and Reverence

The mosque is also known for the relics and shrines it contains. According to tradition, it holds a shrine associated with John the Baptist, revered in both Christianity and Islam. The complex also includes sites of deep significance to many Muslims, and in a small garden beside the mosque lies the tomb of Saladin, the renowned leader who recovered Jerusalem in the twelfth century. Together these features make the Umayyad Mosque a place where history and devotion are tightly intertwined.
