Canakkale pictures
Çanakkale is the central district of Çanakkale province. The population in the district center is around 80,000, and the population in the villages and towns reaches 104,000. Although it has a Bosphorus like Istanbul, its population is quite low. It is the province with the smallest provincial population in Marmara.
The ruins of Troy from ancient times are within the provincial borders. The region started to become Turkified with the Karesioğulları; It later joined the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans crossed into Thrace via Çanakkale.
The old center of the province was actually Biga, and during the Republican period, the name and center of the province was changed to Çanakkale due to the successes achieved. The origin of the name of the province comes from the pottery craft, which is very developed in the region. When Kale-i Sultaniye, which became the two symbols of the city, became synonymous with pottery, the city began to be called Çanakkale.
Çanakkale has been under the domination of different societies for millennia and bears traces of them in both its architecture and life. With the commercial investments that started to be made in the 70s, the traditional social structure in the province was rapidly modernized. With commercial investments, transportation became easier and the appearance of the city began to change. Today, Çanakkale is one of the most modern environments in Turkey.
It is an exemplary city with its wide sidewalks, clean streets and well-kept buildings. Although its infrastructure is not fully established yet, Çanakkale province is one of the leading environments in Turkey in terms of culture. Nuclear family is common in society. The society consists of Turkmens, Pomaks, Yoruks, Bulgarian immigrants and a small number of Kumuk Turks, Circassians and Bosnians. Bosnians and Yoruks generally deal with agriculture.
However, the people live in unity without being separated according to ethnic structure. But every society preserves its own cultural structure. Modern clothing examples have been adopted to a large extent in provincial and district centres. Women from rural areas wear a white scarf and shalwar called Yemeni and a topcoat made of black nylon-like fabric, while the dominant clothing type for rural men is trousers, jackets and caps. It is not often seen that men in the region wear shalwar.
The local cuisine has delicious flavors. Key words to describe Çanakkale cuisine; wine, olives, sardines, cheese halva and kashkek. The islands lead the way in viticulture and winemaking.
Although Çanakkale and other districts are very rich in historical and natural beauties, the region attracts fewer tourists than it should. There is not much investment in tourism. Almost every place around the city center has been declared a protected area. This is one of the main reasons why Çanakkale cannot grow. Many areas are closed to settlement.
