KaunosKaunos; It is an ancient port city established right on the edge of the Dalyan Canal (Colbis), which connects Köyceğiz Lake to the Mediterranean. According to mythology, the history of the city, which was founded by Kaunos, the son of Miletus, dates back to B.C. according to archaeological findings. It goes back to 10 centuries. This ruin, which has been known as a port city from the beginning, contains building ruins from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
On the other hand, the rock tombs carved into the steep rocks to the north of the ruins have an interesting appearance.
Treasures in KaunosKaunos is a very rich region in terms of archaeological excavations, as a place where successive civilizations were established. Although excavations have been going on for decades, the history of the ancient city has not yet been fully elucidated. The artifacts found date back to B.C. It goes back to 300 BC. But archaeologists believe that the history of this city, which they have determined has been robbed throughout history, is at least 5 thousand years old.
The fact that the Acropolis was repaired during the Ottoman period is proof that it was an area that was inhabited until recently. Excavations in Kaunos, part of which is under water, continue only during the summer months. It is estimated that the places unearthed so far are only 10-15 percent of the city.
