Bozcaada / Turkey

Bozcaada Castle

It is not known by whom the castle was built on the northern cape of the island. Used in the Venetian, Genoese and Byzantine periods, the castle was repaired by Fatih Sultan Mehmet due to the importance of the Dardanelles Strait. The castle, which was enlarged by Suleiman the Magnificent and Mahmut II, was reviewed by the Ministry of Tourism in 1965-70. Separated from the island by a 10-meter-wide and 250-meter water ditch, Bozcaada Castle consists of two parts, internal and external. In the sections surrounded by walls, there are water cistern, arsenal, infirmary, headquarters, well, fountain, mosque, workshop and barracks building. The castle is impressive from the inside as well as from the outside with its magnificent appearance. The visitors who climb the walls and bastions with stone steps in warm weather can watch the panorama of Bozcaada from different angles and have the opportunity to photograph. Those who want to visit the museum in the castle admire the various amphoras on display. Illuminated with strong spotlights right after sunset, Bozcaada Castle shines brightly in the middle of the Aegean, as if in proportion to Bodrum Castle.
