Little Venice, London: Canals, Narrowboats & a Waterside Walk

The canals of Little Venice in London

Tucked away in the well-heeled streets of West London, Little Venice is one of the city’s most charming and tranquil corners. Where the Regent’s Canal meets the Grand Union Canal, a pretty pool of water is fringed by elegant white stucco houses, weeping willows, and a flotilla of colorful narrowboats. It’s a peaceful, picturesque world away from the city bustle — perfect for a gentle, romantic stroll.

Canals and Narrowboats

The heart of Little Venice is its waterways, lined with traditional narrowboats — some lived in, some converted into floating cafes, galleries, and even a puppet theatre. Watching the boats drift by, or simply admiring their cheerful painted decoration, is a delight. The area takes its name from a supposed comparison by the poet Robert Browning, who once lived nearby.

A Waterside Walk to Camden

One of the loveliest things to do is to follow the Regent’s Canal towpath. The scenic walk from Little Venice to Camden takes you past Regent’s Park, the grand villas of the surrounding area, and even alongside London Zoo, where you may glimpse some of the animals. It’s a flat, easy, and beautiful route of about 45 minutes that reveals a hidden, watery side of the city.

Canal Boat Trips

If you’d rather travel by water, regular canal boat trips run between Little Venice and Camden, gliding through the Maida Hill Tunnel and past Regent’s Park. It’s a relaxing, scenic way to experience the canals, with commentary bringing the history to life. The London Waterbus and other operators offer this charming and leisurely journey.

Cafes and Calm

Little Venice has a refined, villagey feel, with a handful of waterside pubs, cafes, and restaurants where you can sit and watch the boats. It’s an ideal spot to slow down with a coffee or a leisurely lunch. Each spring, the area hosts the colorful Canalway Cavalcade, a festival of decorated boats, music, and stalls that fills the pool with life.
