Wat Pho: Bangkok’s Reclining Buddha

Just south of the Grand Palace lies Wat Pho, one of Bangkok’s oldest and largest temples and one of its most beloved. Famous above all for its colossal Reclining Buddha, the temple is also regarded as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. With its quieter atmosphere and remarkable art, it makes a perfect pairing with the neighbouring royal complex.

The Reclining Buddha

The temple’s centrepiece is a breathtaking 46-metre-long gilded statue of the Buddha entering nirvana. Its sheer scale is hard to grasp until you walk its full length, ending at the soles of the feet, which are inlaid with mother-of-pearl depicting 108 auspicious symbols. Visitors often drop coins into a row of bronze bowls for good fortune.

A Temple of Learning

Wat Pho has long been a centre of education and healing. It is considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, and a respected massage school still operates on the grounds, where visitors can experience an authentic treatment. Inscribed stone tablets around the temple once served as a public library of medicine and culture.

Chedis and Courtyards

Beyond the Reclining Buddha, the grounds are dotted with hundreds of Buddha images and a forest of colourful chedis, the tallest of which honour past kings. The decorated spires, tiled in glittering ceramic, make the complex a rewarding place to wander away from the crowds.

Visiting Tips

Wat Pho is an easy walk from the Grand Palace, so the two are often combined in one morning. The same modest dress code applies, with shoulders and knees covered. Visiting later in the day, after the palace crowds thin out, can make for a more peaceful experience.

With its awe-inspiring Reclining Buddha and serene courtyards, Wat Pho offers both spectacle and calm. It is an essential stop in Bangkok’s historic heart and a gentle introduction to Thailand’s living Buddhist traditions.
