Yokohama Harbour: Red Brick Warehouse and Osanbashi

Yokohama Bay Bridge and waterfront

Yokohama’s historic harbour is where the city began, the port that opened Japan to foreign trade in 1859. Today the waterfront blends restored brick warehouses, a sweeping promenade, and an elegant passenger terminal, making it one of the most enjoyable areas in the city for a seaside walk.

The Red Brick Warehouse

The two Meiji-era Red Brick Warehouses once stored customs cargo and have been beautifully restored into a complex of shops, restaurants, and event spaces. The open plaza between them hosts seasonal markets and festivals, and the brick facades are especially handsome when lit at night.

Osanbashi Pier

Nearby, the Osanbashi International Passenger Terminal stretches into the bay like a wooden-decked wave. Its rooftop, open to all, is one of the best free viewpoints in Yokohama, with panoramas of the Minato Mirai skyline and arriving cruise ships.

Yamashita Park and the Waterfront

Running along the shore, Yamashita Park offers lawns, rose beds, and the moored ocean liner Hikawa Maru. A continuous promenade links it to the warehouses and pier, making the whole harbour easy to explore on foot.

Atmospheric by day and romantic after dark, Yokohama’s harbour ties the city’s history to its modern waterfront and pairs naturally with a visit to Chinatown and Minato Mirai.
