Okinawa is Japan’s tropical south, a chain of subtropical islands with their own Ryukyu culture, cuisine and pace of life. Naha makes the natural base, with history, shopping and beaches all within reach. This guide brings together our individual Okinawa travel guides so you can plan a complete trip.
Our Okinawa Travel Guides
- Shuri Castle and Old Naha: A Ryukyu Kingdom Walk — the historic heart of the former kingdom.
- Kokusai-dori: Walking Naha’s International Street — shopping, food and nightlife.
- Churaumi Aquarium and Northern Okinawa — whale sharks and Ocean Expo Park.
- Okinawa Beaches and Island Day Trips — the island’s famous turquoise sea.
How Many Days Do You Need?
Three to four days lets you combine Naha’s culture with a trip north to Churaumi and a beach day. With a week you can add the Kerama Islands, a slow coastal drive and more time in the water. Renting a car greatly expands what you can reach beyond the monorail line.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and early summer bring warm, swimmable seas before the peak heat, while autumn stays pleasant after the typhoon-prone late summer. Winter is mild and quiet, ideal for sightseeing if not for swimming.
Use the guides above to build your route, then check our hotel recommendations to find the right base for your stay.
