Shuri Castle is the symbolic heart of old Okinawa and the best place to begin any visit to Naha. Once the royal seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the hilltop site blends Chinese and Japanese influences into something entirely its own, with vermilion gates, stone walls and sweeping views over the capital.
Exploring Shurijo Castle Park
The castle grounds rise in tiers from the Shureimon gate up to the main courtyard. Reconstruction work has continued since the 2019 fire, so check what is open before you go, but the surrounding park, stone gates and royal mausoleum at Tamaudun remain rewarding to walk. Early morning is the calmest time to climb the hill.

The Old Royal Quarter
Around the castle, the Kinjo-cho stone-paved road is a rare surviving fragment of the kingdom era, lined with old wells, banyan trees and traditional homes guarded by shisa lion-dogs. It is a short but atmospheric downhill walk that connects the castle to the modern city below.
Getting There
The Yui Rail monorail runs from Naha Airport directly to Shuri Station, from which the castle is a 15-minute walk uphill. A one-day monorail pass pays for itself if you combine the castle with Kokusai-dori and the prefectural museum in one day.
Shuri sets the historical stage for everything else in Naha. Pair it with a stroll down Kokusai-dori to balance the kingdom’s past with the island’s lively present.
