When to Visit

The cooler months from autumn to spring are the most comfortable, as Iraqi summers are extremely hot. The pilgrimage seasons of Muharram and especially Arbaeen, forty days after Ashura, see immense crowds; they are extraordinary to witness but extremely busy, and accommodation must be arranged far in advance.

Najaf has an international airport that serves many pilgrims, and the two cities are linked by road about eighty kilometres apart.
