Who Comes to Najaf and Karbala
These cities draw Shia pilgrims from across the world who come to honour Imam Ali and Imam Husayn, as well as students of Islamic scholarship and travellers interested in the early history of the faith. The shrines are deeply revered places; visitors are expected to dress modestly and follow local customs at all times.
When to Visit
The cooler months from autumn to spring are the most comfortable, as Iraqi summers are extremely hot. The pilgrimage seasons of Muharram and especially Arbaeen, forty days after Ashura, see immense crowds; they are extraordinary to witness but extremely busy, and accommodation must be arranged far in advance.
Getting There and Travel Notes
Najaf has an international airport that serves many pilgrims, and the two cities are linked by road about eighty kilometres apart. Because conditions in Iraq can change, travellers are strongly advised to check the latest official travel guidance and arrange visits through reputable, experienced operators.
