Hagia Sophia does not stand alone. It rises in the Sultanahmet district on Istanbul’s historic peninsula, a compact area packed with monuments from both the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. For visitors, the surrounding neighbourhood is as rewarding as the great building itself, with many of the city’s most famous sights within easy walking distance.

The Heart of Old Istanbul

The historic peninsula was the centre of two great empires, and its streets are layered with their legacy. Directly facing Hagia Sophia stands the great Ottoman mosque often known for its blue tiled interior, its cascade of domes and slender minarets forming one of the most photographed scenes in the city. Between the two monuments lies a broad public square that was once the ceremonial heart of the Byzantine capital, where chariot races and imperial processions took place.

Palaces, Cisterns, and Bazaars

A short walk from Hagia Sophia leads to the sprawling palace from which the Ottoman sultans ruled their empire for centuries, with its courtyards, pavilions, and treasury overlooking the meeting of the waters. Nearby lies an atmospheric underground cistern from the Byzantine age, its forest of columns reflected in still water. The district also opens onto one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, a labyrinth of shops that has drawn traders and travellers for generations.

A District Made for Walking

What makes Sultanahmet remarkable is how much history is concentrated in so small an area. Within a few minutes on foot, a visitor can pass from a sixth-century church to an Ottoman palace, from an ancient hippodrome to a bustling bazaar. Hagia Sophia sits at the centre of it all, the anchor of a neighbourhood that tells the story of Istanbul across nearly two thousand years.
