Few archaeological sites bring the early Christian world to life as vividly as Ephesus. Once a thriving Roman port city in what is now western Türkiye, it appears repeatedly in the New Testament and remains one of the most rewarding places a traveller can explore on foot. Walking its marble streets is the natural companion to a visit to the nearby House of the Virgin Mary.

An Early Christian Centre

Ephesus was home to one of the first Christian communities. The Apostle Paul lived and taught here for an extended period, and one of his letters – the Epistle to the Ephesians – is addressed to the believers of this city. Tradition also links the Apostle John to Ephesus, and a basilica dedicated to him stands on a hill in nearby Selçuk. In later centuries the city hosted an important early church council.

Highlights of the Ruins

The most photographed monument is the façade of the Library of Celsus, its two storeys of columns and statues beautifully restored. Nearby, the Great Theatre once seated tens of thousands and is mentioned in the Book of Acts as the scene of a public gathering. Curetes Street, lined with column fragments and mosaics, leads visitors past terraced houses, public baths, and the small but elegant Temple of Hadrian.

Practical Tips for Visiting

The site is large and offers little shade, so comfortable shoes, a hat, water, and sun protection make a real difference. Early morning or late afternoon visits avoid both the midday heat and the largest tour crowds. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons. Allow at least two to three hours to explore at a relaxed pace, and consider combining the ruins with the House of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John for a full day.

Getting There

Ephesus lies just outside the town of Selçuk, which is easily reached by train or bus from Izmir. The coastal resort of Kuşadası is also close by and serves as a popular base, particularly for cruise passengers who arrive at its port for a day ashore.
