The island of Mont-Saint-Michel itself has only a handful of small, pricey hotels inside its walls, so most visitors – and almost all budget travellers – stay on the mainland nearby and travel in. The good news is that the gateway area and the surrounding towns offer plenty of well-priced hotels, with free shuttle buses or a pleasant walk out to the mount. This guide is organised area by area, with a shortlist of real, well-reviewed places at the end.

La Caserne: The Mainland Gateway

At the foot of the causeway, the purpose-built gateway area known as La Caserne is the closest place to stay off the island, with a cluster of hotels and the visitor centre. From here, free shuttles run across the bridge to the mount, or you can walk it in around forty minutes with the abbey in view the whole way. It is the most convenient base for catching the mount at quiet hours.

Beauvoir and Pontorson

A few kilometres inland, the village of Beauvoir and the small town of Pontorson offer noticeably better value, with budget hotels, guesthouses and chambres d’hôtes. Pontorson has a railway station with connections toward Rennes and Paris, making it handy for those arriving without a car. Both are a short drive or bus ride from the mount.

Avranches and the Wider Bay

The larger town of Avranches, overlooking the bay, has a good range of practical chain and independent hotels at lower prices, plus its own links to the history of the abbey. It is a sensible base if you want a fuller range of restaurants and services and do not mind a short drive to the mount.

Recommended Budget Stays

The places below are real hotels around Mont-Saint-Michel, with their Google rating and review count at the time of writing. Ratings, availability and prices change – and island hotels are far dearer than mainland ones – so confirm current details before booking.

Budget Tips

Staying on the mainland and using the free shuttle is far cheaper than a room on the island, and you can still walk out early or late to see the mount at its most atmospheric. Book ahead in summer, when the whole area is busy. If you have a car, note that parking is on the mainland and you cannot drive onto the island. For the lowest prices, look at Pontorson and Avranches and treat the mount as a day’s outing.
