Elaia Ancient City Holiday Travel Guide

It is 1 km. away from the Pile Vineyards on the Izmir-Bergama highway. Elaia was built around the acropolis with a height of approximately 18-19 m. Although surface surveys do not reveal rich data, ancient stones emerge from time to time in the fields. In addition, the fortification walls are spread around. Prof.Dr.Schazmann argued that the fortification walls were 3.35 m thick and that they were built in 234 BC.

It was an important settlement of the Old Age and remained on a hill away from the sea due to the alluviums brought by Bakırçayı. We also understand that the city is by the sea from the following lines of Strabo: After the pitanha, you come to the Kaikos river. This river flows into the Gulf of Elaiticus thirty stadia away.

On the opposite bank of Kaikos is Elaia, an Aiol city twelve stadia away from the river. This is the port of the Pergamonites, as it is one hundred and twenty stadia away from Pergamon. Traces of the port and breakwater ruins of the city of Elaia can be seen today. After the harbor walls continue for 182-183 meters, they disappear among the mud.

After the large stone blocks forming these walls were placed in harmony with each other, they were further strengthened with metal clamps. Today, traces of metal clamps can be clearly seen on some stones. In addition, painted Greek ceramics were also found in this part of the city.

Elaia, a word in the Hellenic language, means olive grove. This word is thought to be derived from the Luwian passage or strait. We learn from ancient sources that this place was an olive grove in ancient times. In addition, honey, which has a great share in the production of quality raft on a hill near the city, is also mentioned here. In addition, 4 km of Elaia

the village where olive oil is processed in the northeast also points to the connection of this city with olives. Although the history of Elaia cannot be fully enlightened, it is thought to have been established before the Ionian migration. As a matter of fact, this was mentioned during the Trojan war. According to mythology, the founder of the city is Menestheus. Menestheus, the leader of the Hellas, participated in the campaign against Troia.

Elaia, who was said to have been founded before the Aiol emigration, was not included among the twelve members of the Aiol Union. In the classical period, it was an insignificant city, and the taxes paid to the Delos Union were at a very low level. However, it started to gain importance in the Hellenistic period and this development reached the highest level during the Pergamon Kingdom. It was an important port during the Attalos period and the naval power of the Pergamon Kingdom used this place as a base.

Elaia has also been subjected to raids and invasions many times in history. For a time, the king was sacked by Antiochus, and after 337 BC, he lived a long period of peace. With the collapse of the Kingdom of Pergamon, Elaiada lost its importance. The city, which was not widely known in the Roman period, continued its existence in the Early Byzantine Period, albeit partially.

Elaia has not been adequately researched in terms of archaeology. Today, the fact that some grave stelae have been found in places called Maltepe and Lalelik hill shows the existence of the Necropolis. In addition, the architectural pieces used in vineyard houses in the place called Pile Vineyards are proof that they are important structures of the city. In addition to these structures and finds, some wells were found, but no traces of the theater and the stadium were found. Prof.Dr.

Schanmann drilled here on a small scale in 1918, and W.M.Ramsay and G.E.Bean were satisfied with small notes.
