Bergama Zeus Altar
Pergamon King II. The famous Altar of Zeus, built by Eumenes as a token of gratitude to the savior Zeus after winning the war with Galatians, has unfortunately been in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany for the last 130 years.
Today, only the bases of the magnificent altar, which was taken to Germany during the excavations initiated by the Germans in Bergama in 1871, are in Bergama.
The Altar of Zeus, which was built 2000 years ago in Bergama and considered as one of the most beautiful works of art of the Hellenistic period, has been away from its homeland for 120 years. The masterpiece, 12 meters high and 35 meters long, should return from the hall in Berlin to the Bergama Acropolis, to its real homeland and host its visitors here.
