The oldest settlement around Bala, 25 km away from the district center, is the city ruins called Tomu near the town of Karaali, which was the center, and believed to have remained from the Roman times. It is said that the first human examples, lamp carvings and wall paintings were found in the cave. Archaeologists in the region have also made some studies. The Balans are waiting for the cave to be opened to visitors.
