Information about Cesme – Izmir / Turkey

CASTLE: Çeşme Castle was built in 1508 by the Ottoman Sultan Beyazıt II. The first construction of the castle was right on the sea shore. However, in the following years, it took its present form as a result of the filling of the sea. The Castle and Port protected the merchant and warships from bad weather and enemy attacks. The southern gate of the castle carries all the characteristics of Ottoman architecture. There is a museum inside the castle, and archaeological artifacts from Ildırı (Eritrea) are exhibited in the museum.
KERVANSARAY: The two-storey caravanserai, built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1529, is one of the typical Ottoman caravanserais. Another similar is the architect of the building located in Kuşadası (Öküz Mehmet Pasha Caravanserai), the son of Ali Pabuççu. In the middle of the building, which has a “U” shaped plan, there is a large courtyard, and around this courtyard there are shops, warehouses and rooms. One or more stairs lead to the first floor, which is similar in shape to the ground floor. Passengers are especially foreign merchants. They either find a dwelling there where they can spend the night with their animals or a place to put and sell their goods in the cities. It defines the restoration of the caravanserai and serves as a hotel today.
