It is a small settlement established in honor of Leto, the mother goddess of the Lycians, mother of Apollo and Artemis. The Letoon, or Leto temple, was discovered in 1841 by a British naval officer Hoskya. The history of the letoon is closely related to Xanthos. This place was the cultural center of the Lycian region, the religious center and resting place of the Lycian people. Lycian city-states of Letoon,. At that time, national festivals were held here and their priests held the highest positions in the federation.
Letoon’s name comes from legends. Zeus, the king of the gods, falls in love with Leto, and from their union, Leto becomes pregnant with twins. Fearing Zeus’ jealous wife, Leto runs away and comes to Delos. Here she gives birth to her children Apollo and Artemis. Run away to Lycia, to the Anatolian shores in order to get away from Hera. The wolves he encounters on the way guide him to the Xanthos River. In gratitude, Leto dedicates the river to Apollo and gives the name “Lycia”, derived from the word “lykos”, meaning wolf in Greek, until then known as “Termilles”.
As a result of the excavations that started in 1962, three adjacent temples were brought to light. The first of these is a temple in Ionic order, numbered 6 × 11 columns, 30m x 15m in size and thought to have been built for Leto in 150-100 BC. There is another temple in Doric order with 11 × 6 columns and 27m x 15m dimensions on its east. During the excavations, a Hellenistic mosaic depicting the bow representing Artemis, the arrow sheath and the lyre representing Apollo was also found. Among the Ionic and Doric style temples, there is another temple of smaller dimensions (18m x 8m) built with masonry that can be described as wonderful.
