The stretch of coast between Kamakura and Enoshima is one of the most enjoyable seaside escapes near Tokyo. The vintage Enoden train trundles past beaches and surf towns to the little island of Enoshima, crowned by a shrine and famous for sunset views of Mount Fuji.
The Enoden Line
The single-track Enoden railway hugs the shoreline, at times running so close to houses and the sea that the views feel cinematic. Stops like Kamakurakokomae, with its level crossing beside the ocean, have become beloved photo spots.

Enoshima Island
Connected to the mainland by a bridge, Enoshima rises in tiers of shrines, gardens and an observation tower. Climb or take the escalators to the top for sweeping views, then explore the sea caves below. On clear days Mount Fuji floats on the horizon at sunset.
Getting There
The Enoden line links Kamakura and Enoshima in about 25 minutes, with frequent stops worth a wander. A day pass lets you hop on and off freely along the coast.
The coast adds sea air and big views to a Kamakura trip. Together with the temples and shrines, it makes for a perfectly balanced day out.
