Kensington Palace, London: Royal Home of Victoria & Diana

The Queen Victoria statue outside Kensington Palace

Set in the leafy calm of Kensington Gardens, Kensington Palace has been a royal residence for more than 300 years. Birthplace of Queen Victoria and beloved home of the late Princess Diana, it offers an intimate, very human glimpse into royal life — a gentler, more personal counterpoint to the grandeur of Buckingham Palace. It remains a working royal home today, with several members of the Royal Family living in its private apartments.

A Royal Home Through the Centuries

Originally a modest country house, the palace was transformed for King William III and Queen Mary II in the late 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren. It went on to become the favored home of Georgian monarchs and, most famously, the childhood home of Queen Victoria, who was born and raised here before being woken one morning in 1837 to learn she was queen.

The State Apartments

Inside, the beautifully restored King’s and Queen’s State Apartments dazzle with painted ceilings, grand staircases, and the opulent Cupola Room. Thoughtful exhibitions trace the lives of the royals who lived here, from Georgian court intrigues to Victoria’s reign, bringing the rooms vividly to life.

Princess Diana’s Legacy

For many visitors, the palace is closely tied to Diana, Princess of Wales, who lived here for many years. Special exhibitions have often celebrated her style and legacy, displaying iconic dresses, while outside, the Sunken Garden — with its glorious seasonal blooms and a statue of the Princess — has become a place of quiet reflection and one of the prettiest corners of the grounds.

Kensington Gardens

The palace sits within Kensington Gardens, once its private grounds and now a beautiful free public park. Don’t miss the famous Peter Pan statue, the ornate Albert Memorial, the long tree-lined avenues, and the Italian Gardens. The elegant Orangery, built for Queen Anne, is a lovely spot for a break.

Planning Your Visit

Kensington Palace charges admission and timed tickets are best booked online in advance; the surrounding gardens, however, are free and open daily. Allow a couple of hours for the apartments and exhibitions, then leave time to wander the gardens. The nearest stations are Queensway, High Street Kensington, and Bayswater. It pairs beautifully with a walk through neighboring Hyde Park.
