Tofuku-ji is one of Kyoto’s great Zen temples, a sprawling complex in the southeast of the city founded in the 13th century. While impressive year-round, it is most famous in autumn, when thousands of maple trees turn a valley below its wooden bridge into a sea of red and gold. Beyond the foliage, Tofuku-ji rewards visitors with monumental gates, serene halls, and some of Japan’s most striking modern Zen gardens. This guide covers its main structures, the maple valley, and its celebrated gardens.
Monumental Gates and Halls

Tofuku-ji is built on a grand scale. Its main gate, the Sanmon, is among the oldest and largest Zen gates in Japan, a towering wooden structure that signals the temple’s historical importance. Beyond it stretch spacious halls and corridors connecting the various sub-temples. Walking the grounds, you sense the disciplined, contemplative atmosphere of a major training monastery that has shaped Japanese Zen for centuries.
The Tsutenkyo Bridge and Maple Valley

A covered wooden walkway, the Tsutenkyo Bridge, spans a forested ravine filled with maples. In autumn, the view from the bridge over the blazing canopy is one of Kyoto’s most famous seasonal spectacles, drawing crowds for the brief peak of color. In other seasons the same valley offers cool green shade and a quieter, equally beautiful walk among the trees.
Modern Zen Gardens

Tofuku-ji is also celebrated for its 20th-century gardens designed around the abbot’s hall. Raked gravel, moss, and stone are arranged in bold geometric patterns, including a famous checkerboard of square stones and moss. These gardens reinterpret traditional Zen aesthetics with a modern sensibility, making the temple a key site for anyone interested in Japanese garden design.
Tofuku-ji blends monumental Zen architecture, a legendary autumn landscape, and inventive garden design into one rewarding visit. It sits naturally alongside the temples, shrines, and historic places featured throughout our growing series on Kyoto.
