The delayed restoration of the castle

Babakale, the last castle built by the Ottoman Empire, has been severely damaged in recent years by not being able to resist the harsh winds. There had been collapses in the towers and city walls. Some of the walls built with a mixture of lime-sand like Khorasan were demolished. Under the control of the Istanbul Directorate of Rövle and Monuments, the Ministry of Culture focused on the subject and started the restoration work of the castle. For the restoration works that will be completed by the end of 2002, the granite stones in the region and previously used in the castle are knitted and re-knitted with cement mortar this time, remaining faithful to the original. Babakale’s mosque, whose construction coincides with the same period, awaits the same attention. The glass, which was repaired 42 years ago, was painted in the 80’s and today it is in need of maintenance. The biggest problem in Babakale is the construction of the port, which started in the Tulip Era and still cannot be finished. Necessary stones for the breakwaters were thrown in the port construction works that started in 88, but the work has stopped since 95 due to the bankruptcy of the contractor firm. If stone arrangements are made and concrete is laid on it and inside, the port will successfully serve the yachts landing in the Aegean.
