GORDION YASSIHÖYÜK

Gordion (Yassıhöyük), the capital of Frikya, located 96 km southwest of Ankara, is one of the important ancient cities of Anatolia. In the excavations carried out in the ancient city on the Trade and King Road, starting from the Ancient Bronze Age, civilizations belonging to the Hittites, Frikes, Persians, Greeks and Romans are encountered.
The artworks found in the excavations in the city mound and in 25 tumuli give important clues about the Phrygian art and culture. Most of the works are Ank. Mother. Med. It is exhibited in its museum and in the local museum opposite the Great Tumulus.
Gordion inner and outer city gates, terrace buildings, small mound Tumuli are the ruins that can be seen in the ancient city. Among the tumuli, which are around 80 in number, the largest is the Great Tumulus with a height of 53 meters and a diameter of 300 meters. The second largest tumulus in Anatolia, the grave chamber was created by placing juniper and cedar trees on top of each other, and a stone wall was built around it. A triangular roof is placed on the burial chamber supported by beams. 4 meters of stones were lined up and first clayey then normal soil was piled on it. The monumental burial chamber is entered through a specially made tunnel. The very cool air and humidity percentage of the specially made burial chamber, which allows the contents to remain intact for a long time and increase the durability period, draws attention.
