Information About Bodrum – Mugla / Turkey

Bodrum castle
Bodrum Castle was built between two harbors, on a rocky peninsula surrounded on three sides by the sea. It depends on the land from the north direction. The castle shows a plan close to the square. It measures 180 x 185 meters. Its highest point is the French tower, which is 47.50 meters above sea level. Apart from this tower, there are four other towers, namely the English, Italian and German towers and the Serpentine tower. The parts of the fort outside the eastern wall are reinforced with double body walls. Since the knights had a strong navy in the sea, they believed that they would fend off an attack from the sea, so they left the sea walls weak and strengthened the walls on the land side.
The inner castle is reached by passing seven gates. The 1st gate of the castle is in the northwest corner. The door is reached by a ramp road next to the police station. At the beginning of the ramp, the door is behind the slope. Thus, the door is protected from direct cannon shots. There is an inscription in Greek on the marble door lintel. Jacques Gatineau, who commanded the castle between 1512-1513, warns that those who will spy in the castle will be punished. This shows that the knights did not trust those who lived around.
