Ancient Theater
It is one of the important remains from the Hellenistic period. Its capacity is 13,000 people. It consists of 3 main parts. These are Stage, Orchestra and Seating. The building is a tall rectangular structure. There are doors at both ends for players to enter. Apart from these, there are 3 main entrance gates. After the excavations in 1973, it was organized as an open air museum.
The moon enters the stage and the monumental Ancient Theater, which has reached the present day, shines on the southern slope of Göktepe. This building, which is suitable for the ancient tradition, leaning against the slope, was restored in the period of Mavsolos with the stage (skene), orchestra pit and seating (Kavea or theatreon) At the time, it is considered one of the oldest theaters in Anatolia.
The seating areas leaning on the slope by carving the soft bedrock are divided into two parts: ´diazoma´, which passes through the middle, alt maenia´ and top maenia´. In the Ancient Theater you will see, you will be able to visit the sub-section, which is very solid and divided into 11 parts by 12 radial stairs, and you will be able to read the names of some of the seats written on them – in that era – the names of those who helped the theater or bought a combined ticket!
