Information About Bodrum – Mugla / Turkey

Mausoleum
The construction of Mausoleum, which is considered as one of the seven wonders of the world, started in the time of the Carian Satrap Mavsolos (estimated 355 BC).
This work is a giant mausoleum crowned by a 21-step pyramid, originally 46 meters high and with a triumphal carriage on top, decorated with 36 columns in Ionic order.
M.S. Preserved until 13th century, the ancient tomb was destroyed by an earthquake and then its stones were used in the construction of Bodrum Castle. In addition, many reliefs and sculptures belonging to this tomb were taken to the British Museum in 1856 by the British archaeologist C. Newton. For this reason, most of the works belonging to this monument are exhibited in the British Museum, but only a few of them are in Bodrum.
