WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED ABOUT MARS’S PAST AND TODAY?
Why is Mars at the center of space studies?
The studies of scientists and the data of robotic rovers sent to Mars have revealed clear evidence that the wind blew and water flowed on the surface for a period of time on the Red Planet.
In the past, the atmosphere was thicker and allowed water to stay on the planet’s surface.
The seasons were closer to Earth seasons, when dust storms did not take place.
In 2015, NASA scientists thought they had found evidence of brine streams flowing on the surface of Mars. However, another NASA study from 2017 concluded that the streams were most likely grains of sand and dust.
In 2018, NASA’s Curiosity rover found organic matter on Mars. This is regarded as one of the greatest proofs ever that the building blocks of life once existed on Mars.
Immediately afterward, a small lake of liquid water was spotted under Mars ‘south polar ice cap, and in 2019 the Curiosity rover found evidence that ancient salt lakes were once found on the surface in Mars’ Gale Crater.
